By ABC Investigative Unit reporter Andrew Fowler
The French embassy has lodged a formal complaint with the Immigration Department after it failed to tell them a French tourist had been locked up at the Villawood detention centre in Sydney.

When Immigration officials suspected Mahamadou Sacko's passport was fake, they took him to Villawood but did not call the French embassy to verify his identity.

Now it seems the Australian Government is quite willing to push further the boundaries of international law - and the excuse is that it wasn't someone's responsibility.

Failing the basic tenants of international responsibility to those foreign nationals on our shores is absolutely shocking. For a country that is supposedly reknowned for its hospitality, I can't believe that these simple and required steps can't be followed properly.

The Cornelia Rau case was the first example of the shoddy administrative treatment of those people detained in Immigration centre's around Australia. The revelations that an Australian citizen could be treated like a detention centre detainee outraged many Australians. Why hasn't the same outrage been felt by Australians regarding the same degree of treatment by hundreds of foreign nationals in the same centres? It is absolutely mind boggling!

I'm afraid that with all the claims, counter-claims and spin made about our nation's mandatory detention policy, many Australians have grown weary of this whole escapade and have decided to tune out (cricket is much more interesting you see...). We're for sure guilty of doing nothing for those who aren't Australian, particularly if you could be a potential terrorist, well, I mean with a name like that he's obviously a Muslim... That attitude sucks! With the fuss regarding the process of charging and prosecuting an alleged Aussie drug smuggler in Indonesia, why isn't the same outrage felt by Australians about our 'fair' system letting down foreigners on our shores? If we're going to detain people, why aren't we doing the utmost to prove or disprove their claims? Instead, we let people rot somewhere beyond the black stump, suffering mentally, emotionally, and in cases physically while we sit down and fiddle with our thumbs or the remote control.

If you're going to play a hardline, you should follow it up with vigour & responsibility and due care.
